Marlborough schools champion shows class at South Island Karting Champs

National schools champion Arthur Broughan continued his successful season, claiming the Rotax Junior honours at the South Island Sprint Championships at Kartsport Canterbury’s track in Halswell, Christchurch.

The Marlborough Boys College driver won three of his four races, including the pre-final and final in the Rotax Max Junior class, with a flag-to-flag victory in the main from Canterbury’s Izack Fletcher and Nelson’s Ollie Workman.

Hometown’s Simon Hunter saved his best until last to win the Rotax Max Heavy category, after clubmate Thomas Emmerson had won both qualifying heats and the pre-final. Emmerson led away in the grand-final, until Hunter pounced on lap 20, and then gave way to Emmerson again the following lap. However, Hunter made the pass stick on the following lap and held on for the honours from Emmerson and Canterbury’s Scott Waller.

There was no charge from the back in the Rotax Max Light where Caleb Cross (Canterbury) won both heats, pre-final and final in impressive fashion from Marlborough’s William Exton and Canterbury’s Blake Knowles.

It was the same for Chris Cox in the Rok DVS category from Canterbury clubmate Cameron Hay, likewise Jarred Cleghorn (Canterbury) in the Briggs Heavy class. Cleghorn was first and second in Saturday’s heats, took out the pre-final after clubmate Daniel Bell was relegated back, and then claimed the final with a flag-to-flag victory from Paul Hughes (Canterbury) and Andrew Goodsir (Marlborough). Bell had finished second on track, but unfortunately forgot to carry his transponder, leaving him out of the results.

Canterbury’s Myles Findlay worked his way to the top in the Briggs Light class, with a third and second in heats on Saturday. He went one better to win the pre-final and got the holeshot from the flag in the final.

However, clubmate Johan Roberts had other ideas to claim the lead on lap five, holding the advantage until the 30th and final lap when Findlay forced his way through to the win, with Nelson’s Tony Dyer third, to complete a consistent weekend with four podiums.

The results of the Vortex Mini ROK class are unable to be confirmed with an appeal currently lodged.
